Weekend

I just love summer blooms.  So brilliantly full of color.  They just make you smile.  It is definitely summer here, although we've had quite a bit of rain as well.  No complaints from me - it waters my garden.

Speaking of my garden, I'm having issues with a few pests this year.  Mostly chipmunks.  They are wreaking havoc on my plants.  I've mulched a bed with a thick layer of hay - I'm hoping this will deter the little garden-wreckers from making holes in it.  If it works, I'll be layering all beds.

Can you believe how big the chicks are getting?  You can now clearly see the colors from the 2 breeds that make up the Red Sex-Link Chicks - Rhode Island Red and White Plymouth Rock.  They are adorable and into everything.

They are quickly outgrowing the crate we have them in, so we will need to put up the coop inside the coop next weekend to give them more space.  We're trying to hold off until they're big enough to not fit through the wires.  No escapees!

So, on a whim, I decided to make homemade hot dog buns for our lunch today.  Here's why.  I ate hot dogs for the first time 3 weeks ago.  I guess I can't technically say for the first time as neither I nor my mother can remember if I ever had any as a small child.  So instead I'll say, my first hot dog that I can remember.

I'm not sure why I haven't eaten hot dogs, for some reason they just didn't seem appealing to me.  As a child I had some odd food choices.  I disliked sugary cereals and instead ate either Product 19 or Grape Nuts  I didn't care for Wonder Bread, and instead preferred Roman Meal.

My husband is a hot dog fan so each time he prepares hot dogs for lunch I make a sandwich or salad for myself.  He about fell off his chair 3 weeks ago when I gave him an extra hot dog to grill......for me.  He didn't believe I would eat it and assumed he would be packaging it up to bring for lunch during the week.  I ate it.  Although the hot dog was ok, the bun was not.  That's why I decided if I was going to eat another hot dog I was going to need to improve the bun.

Boy did I.

I took a recipe by King Arthur Flour for hamburger buns and altered it.  It was delicious.  Filling, but delicious.  I'll be posting the recipe this week.

In the same cookbook was a recipe for Toaster Pastries.  I was not quite as impressed with these.  The idea was good, however, I wasn't fond of the recipe for the dough.  It called for cream of tartar and the flavor is too prominent.  Also, the crust is a little too hard.  I'll be trying a different recipe next weekend.

Jay and I actually began our weekend a day early.  We both took Friday off and headed for Rhode Island for the day.  We drove down to Galilee and Point Judith, both are on the Southern shore.  It was an absolutely beautiful day and we had a wonderful time.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

I don't think I've ever known someone who hadn't had a hot dog! I have to say, they are one of my favorites, however I'm a bit picky about which ones I'll eat--I like 'Hebrew National' which are kosher and (I think) have a good flavor...But I have never thought of making my own buns--I think they would make them that much better! :-)
