My Sun-Bathing Bat

Well, Batman, our bat friend, has been back everyday and some days in the sun.  We're thinking he may get too warm wherever he's been sleeping?  Tuesday he appeared around noon, then disappeared about an hour later only to come back once the side of the barn he sleeps on was in the shade around 3:30.  Around 3:30 is his typical appearance time.

Jay's thinking of making him a house.  I thought that would be a nice gesture I mean, after all, you should make guests feel comfortable, right?

What a cute little guy! Do you know if it's common for bats to sleep on the sides of buildings like that?

Sarah - well that's a lot of mosquitoes! That's why I'm hoping he really does make the house for him. :)

Tammy - yes, I think he really would appreciate it. :)

Tanya - I don't think they typically sleep on the sides of buildings but apparently it's not uncommon for them to be out during the day although the sun hurts their eyes. I'm not sure why all of a sudden he's adopted the barn.

Aren't they suppose to be beneficial in your garden? Oooh, I don't think I could have them around!!

Have a Great Eve!

Bats eat so many insects. How wonderful you have a resident batman!! Yes, make a house..am sure he would appreciate it very much. I do find it odd he is in the sun though, so perhaps he is unwell. Might do a little googling to find out.

Bats eat an inordinate amount of those pesky mosquitos! I think a house for them would be wonderful :)

We enjoyed this site when we researched the little critters:

We saw our first bats a couple of weeks ago, and haven't seen them since and now I'm wondering if they were hungry and came out to find food and couldn't and got too cold~~So I would give little Batman anything he wants! :-)

While I don't wish to be a downer about your little bat, since his behavior seems somewhat different, its good to remember bats can carry rabies!

Be careful.

I love the new Cobble Hill critter. Don't believe I've ever seen one in the daytime. I like to have them around outside for insect control. Creeps me out though, when one gets in the house. Is "Batman" his official name?

Yes, we are certainly hoping he will stick around and I am not interested in getting too close to him {with the exception of the photos although I'm a bit of a chicken which is why they aren't as close and as clear as they could be}.

Thanks Terri - I'll check out that site.

Mary - yes, that's become his official name. Not very original is it? :)

I found bats living behind our shutters by accident when i was pressure washing the house. I went out and bought them a bat house, but they prefer the shutter. I enjoy catching a glimpse of them at dusk.
