Chicken Dustbaths

Every chicken desires a good dust bath from time-to-time.  Think of it like spa treatment for chickens.  A dust bath is actually essential for good health as it helps them naturally fight off parasites.

It seems, at least initially, that you will have a group of very dirty girls at the end of their bath, but not so.  After the dust bath, they will shake the dirt off and you'd never know they were a good 12 inches into the ground.

Chickens will make their own dust bath out of loose, dry dirt.  If your space is limited, or, if the only loose dry dirt you have is in your garden, you can make a dust bathing area for them with a simple tub or large litter box.  Add dirt and dry sand and voila!  You will have some happy hens.

My Chicks are already learning this.... in the shredded paper that is lining their brooding box. Its quite funny to watch 6 or 7 chicks flinging paper up and about.

It's so fun to watch them dust bathe! Our big dog Duchess likes to dig holes and the chickens have found that her holes are the perfect dust bathing spots :)

If you use a tub of sand/dirt, how often does it need to be changed out?
