Recipe: Slow-Cooker Applesauce

Homemade applesauce is something you should make for 2 reasons:  1.  It tastes amazing and 2. Your house will smell so good you'll be tempted to make it frequently.  Adjust the sugar and spices to your liking - it really is an easy and adaptable recipe.

Sometimes I load up the slow-cooker in the evening and by morning we wake to a delicious cinnamon-apple smell that immediately makes you hungry and can be easily incorporated into breakfast - either on oatmeal or on the side of whatever you're serving.

If you've never made your own applesauce before, once you've seen how easy it is and how much more flavorful it is over the jarred version, you'll be a homemade applesauce convert.

Slow-Cooker Applesauce

makes 2-3 cups

8-10 large apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
3/4 cup to 1 cup granulated sugar OR light brown sugar
1/2 cup apple cider, apple juice OR water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch of nutmeg

Combine all ingredients in a slow-cooker, stirring to combine.  Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours, or until the apples are completely broken down.  Serve it chunky or mash it to your desired consistency.  {If you like very smooth applesauce, let it cool then process in a food processor}.

Store in the refrigerator or freeze for longer storage.
