Lemon-Poppyseed Moisturizing Sugar Scrub

Sugar scrubs are easy-peasy to make.  They really are!  Granulated and/or brown sugar + oil + fragrance = a wonderful scrub.  From there you can make variations, such as this one.

What makes this particular scrub moisturizing?  The addition of coconut oil, shea butter and/or cocoa butter will leave a wonderful moisturizing layer on your skin at the end of your shower.  You will almost feel like you have lotion on - it's that good.  The poppy seeds add a bit more gentle exfoliation for your skin.

You can certainly make this without the coconut oil and butter {use a total 3 Tablespoons liquid oil instead}, however, it will be a regular sugar scrub and not extra moisturizing.  Because the coconut oil and shea/cocoa butter harden at room temperature, this scrub uses a bit more oil and will seem very oily when you first make it.  It will get less greasy as the oils come back to room temperature.  If you feel the scrub is too dry, add more oil {liquid at room temp.}, 1 teaspoon at a time until you're happy with it.  Conversely, if you feel it's too greasy, just add a bit more sugar, 1 teaspoon at at time, until you're happy with it.

Another quick note, this scrub will be white unless you choose to add either cosmetic coloring or 1 drop of yellow food coloring.  You can choose if you want the color or not, for more on artificial coloring, see my article here.

If you will be using this scrub right away, you can use fresh lemon juice.  If, however, you will be gifting this and you aren't sure when the recipient will be using it, I would suggest using a lemon essential oil instead.  With the essential oil, the unused scrub should have a 2 month shelf life.

Lemon-Poppyseed Moisturizing Sugar Scrub
makes 1/2 cup of sugar scrub

1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 Tablespoons oil {olive, grapeseed, or sweet almond}
1/2 Tablespoon shea or cocoa butter, melted
1/2 Tablespoon coconut oil, melted
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice {or 5-8 drops lemon essential oil - see note above}
1 teaspoon poppy seeds

Melt the coconut oil and shea/cocoa butter either in the microwave at 20 second intervals, or in a double boiler.

In a medium-size bowl, mix all ingredients together with a spatula or wooden spoon.  Transfer to a canning jar or other container for storage.  Use within 1 week if using lemon juice or 2 months if using essential oils.

To use:  At the end of your shower, apply sugar scrub to your body, gently rubbing in a circular motion.  Rinse.  Towel dry.  *caution - may make the shower floor slippery.*
