The Buddy System - Companion Planting In The Garden

Companion planting is an important aspect of any garden but particularly important to an organic garden because it can naturally assist in insect control and sometimes give added vigor to the plant.  It's also important to know what grows together/doesn't grow well together so you aren't hindering their growth and overall health.

Here are a few typical garden plants and a list of what they like and/or don't like:

Beans - like carrots, cauliflower and marigolds.  More specifically, Green Beans like savory, Broad Beans like corn, Bush Beans like a moderate amount of celery, cucumbers, strawberries and summer savory.  Pole Beans like corn and summer savory and dislike kohlrabi, sunflower and beets.

Beets like bush beans, onions and kohlrabi.  Dislikes pole beans.

Broccoli likes dill, celery, chamomile, sage, peppermint, rosemary, potatoes, beets and onions.  Dislikes tomatoes, pole beans and strawberries.

Cabbage likes hyssop, thyme, celery, dill, chamomile, sage, peppermint, rosemary, onions and potatoes.  Dislikes potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes and pole beans.

  1. I can't wait until we get moved up to OR, and find a new home. Next year I will be re-reading this article as I plan my garden! Thanks for this information.

  2. Thank you for this great list! I'm going to print it and add it to my farming binder I've made :) Right now, I'm stuck doing container gardening, but when we purchase land, I'm hopeful for companion planting. One of my friends has been organic companion planting for about 5 years, and it seems to help cut down on the pests and increase the yields. Here's hoping!
