$60.00 A Week Grocery Budget Challenge


Is it spring or is it winter?  We can't seem to decide in our neck of the woods.  Some days it's warmer with a bit of rain and humidity and others it's downright chilly.  This also makes it a tad difficult for meal planning as the warming soups and stews are not desired on warmer days.  I believe all of this week will be winter, however, so I've put traditional cold weather food on the menu.


Meal Plan:

Monday
Breakfast - Freezer Breakfast Burritos
Lunch - Chicken & Noodle Soup {leftover apples, pears and/or oranges will be served with all breakfast and lunches this week}
Dinner - Freezer Meal: Slow-Cooker Honey-Mustard Chicken and Rice with Steamed Spinach {brought over from last week - I did not end up cooking this last Friday}

Tuesday
Breakfast - Oatmeal with {frozen}Peaches & Brown Sugar
Lunch - Sausage, Kale & Orzo Soup
Dinner - Baked Cod with Roasted Potato Bites and Acorn Squash

Wednesday
Breakfast - Freezer Breakfast Burritos
Lunch - Chicken & Noodle Soup
Dinner - Stuffed Pork Chops with Cranberry Chutney and Broccoli-Cheese Rice

Thursday
Breakfast - Oatmeal with {frozen}Peaches & Brown Sugar
Lunch - Sausage, Kale & Orzo Soup
Dinner - Salisbury Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Honey-Glazed Carrots

Friday
Breakfast - Freezer Breakfast Burritos
Lunch - Chicken & Noodle Soup
Dinner - Chicken Pot Pie

Saturday
Breakfast - Breakfast Sandwich
Lunch - Taco Soup
Dinner - Slow-Cooker Unstuffed Cabbage

Sunday
Breakfast - Breakfast Casserole
Lunch - Sandwich & Leftover Soup
Dinner - Cranberry Pork Roast with Scalloped Potatoes and Steamed Broccoli

 - broccoli, spinach, cranberries, celery, soda, olive oil, cabbage, orange juice,

Price Chopper: $14.79
- Pork Roast {$1.69/lb}, Orzo

Farmer's Market: $14.00
- potatoes, carrots, milk, cream, kale

I love that you share your meal planning and budget for the week. Do you mind if I ask, how many people you are feeding on this budget? We have recently set $100.00 a week grocery budget for our family of four that includes 2 very hungry teenagers, my husband and myself and have found out that we can stay within this budget and actually have money left over each week and this also includes chicken feed for 10 chickens and dog food for 3 dogs on our micro mini farm ;-) I am enjoying reading along as I am a soapmaker too ;-)

I am thoroughly impressed with your $60 weekly budget for groceries. I would like to know what your monthly grocery bill is (approximately).

I'm going to work this into my budget so would greatly appreciate knowing the approximate monthly dollar figure. I like your system and want to start once I know the approximate monthly dollar figure you end up with each month (rounded up I guess would be best so I don't go over my monthly budget). Living solely on S/S so things are extremely tight and getting worse with increased prices on everything.

Jennifer - wow - very impressive! We are a family of 2 and it can be difficult to just keep our budget low. :)

Bobbie - we average right around $200.00 a month. We could certainly spend less if we needed to. We buy more veggies in the fall/winter because the garden is put to bed. During the summer we buy very few if any fruit/veggies/herbs because the garden is so bountiful so our grocery budget is spent stocking up on meat during the grocery store sales. I hope this helps!!
